The Race for Colorado Secretary of State: Amanda Gonzalez, Democrat for SOS

The Clerk and Recorder of the Pod joins us to talk the evisceration of the VRA, the gerrymandering wars, and how freaked out voters should be about Trump trying to interfere with the midterms

This week on the Get More Smarter Podcast, we make yet another new Friend of the Pod, except this time she’s been administering our elections in Jefferson County for the last four years. Amanda Gonzalez joined us this week to tell our listeners (and viewers!) why she thinks she’d be the best Democrat to protect Colorado’s elections in 2028 and beyond.

Amanda Gonzalez is a dedicated professional known for her instrumental work in promoting civic engagement through policy development. She serves as the Clerk and Recorder in Jefferson County where she is the first Latina in the role. Gonzalez previously served as the Executive Director of Colorado Common Cause, a nonpartisan organization committed to advancing good governance. During her tenure, she played a pivotal role in formulating and advocating for policies that expanded ballot access, curtailed the influence of money in politics, created Colorado’s independent redistricting commission, and ensured an accurate count in the 2020 Census.

Throughout her career, Amanda has held diverse roles, including policy analyst, staff attorney, small business CEO, nonprofit executive director, and Chicano Studies adjunct professor. She is the first in her family to go to college, holding degrees from Occidental College and the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Clerk Gonzalez was elected by Jeffco voters in November of 2022 and is serving a four-year term. As the County Clerk and Recorder, she oversees one of the most public facing offices in Colorado government, directly serving almost every person in our large and diverse county. She conducts safe, secure elections, runs the county’s DMV, provides marriage licenses to couples and liquor licenses to businesses, is the keeper of the county’s public documents records, and processes passport applications.
